A Legacy in Action: Service, Advocacy and Sisterhood
More than a century after the Founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated participated in the historic 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession, the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter continues to carry that legacy forward through service, advocacy, education and sisterhood. The march marked the Sorority’s first public-service action and established a commitment to social change that remains central to its work today.
Throughout the opening months of 2025, chapter members honored that foundation by supporting initiatives designed to strengthen individuals, families and the greater Fort Wayne community.
Honoring Our Foundation
The chapter began the year by commemorating 112 years of sisterhood, scholarship, service and social action during its Founders Day observance.
Members gathered at DeBrand Fine Chocolates to participate virtually in the National Founders Day Celebration. The gathering provided an opportunity to reflect on the Sorority’s history, celebrate its enduring legacy and renew the chapter’s commitment to purposeful service.
Advancing Health and Heritage
In February, the chapter focused on community wellness and cultural celebration.
A Healthy Eating and Cooking Class provided participants with practical information and tools to support healthier choices for themselves and their families. By connecting education with everyday application, the program encouraged sustainable approaches to personal and household wellness.
The chapter also supported the Fort Wayne NAACP Black History Month Brunch. Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter Vice President Dawn Moore served as mistress of ceremonies, helping guide a celebration centered on Black history, achievement and community leadership.
Together, these activities reflected the chapter’s commitment to strengthening the community through education, partnership and cultural awareness.
Advocacy in Action
Chapter members continued their commitment to social action by participating in Delta Days at the State Capitol.
Alongside members from across Indiana, participants engaged with legislators and learned more about public-policy matters affecting their communities. Their presence reinforced the importance of informed civic participation and the connection between advocacy, public policy and lasting community change.
Strengthening the Sisterhood Behind the Service
Effective public service is sustained by a strong and connected sisterhood.
During March, members participated in activities designed to support wellness, fellowship and meaningful engagement. These included Walk It Out Thursdays, handwritten cards for
Delta Dears, a virtual book club and a community worship experience.
These moments of connection strengthened the relationships that allow chapter members to serve with energy, compassion and shared purpose.
A Legacy That Continues
From community wellness and cultural celebration to civic advocacy and sisterhood, the Fort Wayne Alumnae Chapter entered 2025 with a clear commitment to action.
The chapter remains grounded in the legacy established by Delta Sigma Theta’s Founders and dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of the Fort Wayne community. Through intentional programs, strategic partnerships and continued service, that legacy remains active, strengthening the community and inspiring meaningful change.
